Emil S. Cheng, M.D.

Dr. Cheng is a physiatrist at New Mexico Spine. He is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and fellowship-trained in the diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of spine and musculoskeletal disorders.

Dr. Cheng is skilled in treating patients with occupational and sports-related injuries, including back, neck, joint and nerve disorders, as well as musculoskeletal diseases. He is proficient in performing electrodiagnostic testing in addition to spinal interventional procedures, including fluoroscopically-guided spinal injections, discography, radiofrequency neurotomy and intradiscal electrothermal annuloplasty.

Before joining New Mexico Spine, Dr. Cheng was an assistant professor in the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, where he also had a conjoint appoint to the department of neurological surgery. Dr. Cheng practiced as an associate physician with the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch (CINN) and the CINN Institute of Spine Care in Chicago.

Dr. Cheng graduated with honors from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia with a degree in bioengineering. He earned his medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and his internship in internal medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Cheng’s residency at the University of Utah School of Medicine focused in physical medicine and rehabilitation, where he served as chief resident. He continued to undergo specialized training with a fellowship in spine and sports medicine at CINN.

Dr. Cheng has given many lectures and contributed to the publication of several articles and a book. He currently serves on the PASSOR research committee and as an instructor at the PASSOR spinal procedures workshops.

Dr. Cheng served as the team physician for Gordon Technical High School in Chicago in 2002-2003. He also volunteered at the Park City Ski Resort Injury Clinic and the Winter Paralympic Village Polyclinic in Salt Lake City during the Winter Paralympics in 2002. Dr. Cheng was also a ringside physician for USA Amateur Boxing in Salt Lake City.

Dr. Cheng is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R), the Physiatric Association of Spine, Sports and Occupational Rehabilitation (PASSOR), the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AAEM), the Illinois Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ISPM&R) and the International Spinal Injections Society (ISIS).
